Terry Piper

Dr. Terry Piper is currently the Vice President for Student Affairs at California State University, Northridge and holds a faculty appointment in the department of Educational Psychology and Counseling. He earned a Bachelors degree in Secondary Education from Pennsylvania State University, a MA degree in College Student Development and Higher Education from the University of Iowa, and a Ph.D. in Educational Policy and Leadership from The Ohio State University.

Prior to arriving at California State University, Northridge, Terry served the University of Nevada, Las Vegas first as the Director of Residential Life and then as Associate Vice President for Student Services. He received the Best New Idea in Student Services Award presented by the National On-Campus Report for the creation of the Community Standards Program at UNLV. Terry began his career as a Residence Hall Director at The Ohio State University. He also held the position of Residence Hall Area Coordinator before leaving OSU for UNLV.

Terry is widely recognized for his expertise in the areas of student development theory and practice as well as student learning. His residence hall Community Standards model has been widely adopted by college and universities across the country. In addition to twelve publications, Terry has made over 30 presentations at national conventions, has served as an invited or keynote speaker and as a faculty-in-residence at a number of conferences.

Terry has held a variety of leadership position in the American College Personnel Association during his career and currently serves on the ACPA Educational Leadership Foundation. Terry’s contribution to student affairs practice has been recognized by the American College Personnel Association through the Excellence in Practice Award and as a Diamond Honoree. He has also been presented with awards from his graduate programs at the University of Iowa and The Ohio State University for his contribution to the profession.
