Eligibility for taking the Comprehensive Exam
Students must have completed all course work, or be taking their final courses during the semester in which the comprehensive examination is given. Subject areas addressed in the Comprehensive Examination: General Administration (includes Human Resources), Supervision, Curriculum, Elementary or Secondary Administration or Higher Education, School Finance and School Law. Examinations are typically given on the first Saturdays in the months of December for the Fall Semester and in May for the Spring Semester.
Notification of Passing/Failing
It takes approximately 2 weeks for examination to be reviewed and graded. Students will be notified via mail and grades will be posted on student transcripts. Students should not request grade over the telephone or by visiting the ELPS office.
Two Time Rule
Students who are required to take the comps may not take the exam more than twice.
a. Students who fail the examination at the first attempt may be required to take prescribed coursework. If no such course work is prescribed, students still are required to register for the semester or summer session in which the second attempt is offered.
b. Failure of the second attempt of the comprehensive examination results in the disqualification from the Master’s program in that department.
c. The first attempt is defined as the complete comprehensive examination prescribed by the Master’s program The second attempt is defined as retaking a second examination on the entire program, or, at the discretion of the department, a supplementary examination on any part or parts of the first examination on which the student failed.
d. Graduate Coordinators shall file the result of each examination with the Office of Graduate Studies.
e. Once students have enrolled in, and/or attempted the comprehensive examination and failed it (or any part), they may not change to any of the Thesis, Graduate Project, or Artistic Performance options.
