The Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs is responsible for the overall quality of student life at California State University, Northridge. The Vice President and his staff provide coordination and direction to the Division of Student Affairs and work closely with other components of the campus to ensure that programs, services, policies, and procedures foster the development of students and the achievement of their academic and career goals.
The office is responsible for the coordination of Freshman and Honors Convocations and University Commencement Exercises. Matters related to student conduct and academic integrity also fall within the purview of the Vice President for Student Affairs.
Programs within the Division of Student Affairs include the Career Center, Student Housing, Student Development and International Programs, Student Health Center, Center on Disabilities, Student Outreach and Recruitment, University Counseling Services, University Student Union, National Center on Deafness, and Financial Aid.
The Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs serves as the official university liaison to the Associated Students and the University Student Union. All students, particularly those unaware of which University office or resource would best be able to aid them with their problems or concerns, are welcome to visit the office for appropriate referral and advisement.

The Associated Students is the primary advocate for students at California State University,
Northridge and provides excellent, meaningful programs and services designed to create and enhance a spirited, learning-focused campus environment. All registered students are members of the Associated Students of California State University, Northridge. This incorporated campus entity is governed by elected student leaders including a President, Vice President and a 28-member Senate. The senate sets policy, governs financial matters, provides student service programs, provides input on University policies and recommends students to serve on University advisory boards. All students are assessed a semester based fee which generates revenue to support over 200 clubs and organizations, leadership programs, Intercollegiate Athletics and Financial Aid. Associated Students provides a Ticket Office, Recreation Sports, the Children’s Center, the University Recycling Program, student health insurance, and a wide variety of cultural programs, concerts, films, and speakers.

The Career Center helps students to explore majors and careers; make informed choices; clarify life and career goals; and prepare for the transition from graduation to employment or graduate school. We assist students in finding a direction for their studies by connecting academic and career plans.
At the Career Center students learn to identify their strengths, interests, and values; investigate their options; practice career skills; and prepare for the job search. Our services and programs engage students in experiential and reflective activities; research; seminars; peer mentoring; work-based learning opportunities; and counseling. The Career Library contains resources on self-discovery, choosing majors, goal setting, careers and industries; trends; salaries; and job search skills.
The Career Center has an active website that houses career information and online career services. Students can register at the site; stay informed about upcoming career events; take career assessments; match majors with careers; find online workshops; participate in campus interviews; and view job and internship listings. Registered students hear from us regularly about opportunities to connect with employers for career exploration, jobs, internships, and company information sessions. Services are provided at no charge to currently enrolled CSU students. Fees are charged to graduates, to university students enrolled through Extended Learning/CSU Northridge, and to referrals from campus and community.

The Center on Disabilities provides a variety of support services to empower students, foster independence, promote achievement of realistic career and educational goals and assist students to discover, develop and demonstrate their full potential and abilities. The Center on Disabilities provides academic support under federal and state regulations to ensure full access to programs and activities at Cal State Northridge. These services include:

Under the joint sponsorship of the university and Associated Students, the Children’s Center provides early childhood education and care for the children of students formally admitted and currently enrolled at CSUN. The Children’s Center has the capacity to care for 140 children (ages three months to five years) during the hours of 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. Because the Children’s Center is a state campus child development center, some subsidized (free or low cost) openings may be available. Also, there is subsidized care for low income student parents days, evenings, weekends and holidays with children age three months to twelve years in our network of family child care homes. The university offers a broad program of competitive sports for

National Center on Deafness (NCOD)

Since 1962 the National Center on Deafness has pioneered in serving students who are deaf and hard of hearing at the University level. NCOD, internationally recognized for its programs and serves as a model for other institutes, provides innovative orientation programs, direct communication (sign) classes, full communication access, interpreting, captioning, note taking, tutoring, and academic advisement to students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Each semester approximately 200 students who are deaf and hard of hearing have access to University classes, functions and student sponsored co-curricular activities. NCOD also provides in-service training for service providers through its Summer Institute.
Under a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Department of Education, NCOD also offers technical advice and training on how to provide quality services to postsecondary institutions currently serving or planning to serve students who are deaf or hard of hearing in western USA. The CSUN model for providing service to students who are deaf and hard of hearing is shared with the western regional postsecondary institutions (colleges, universities, technical schools, and training programs) as well as with the other three U.S. Department of Education sponsored regional technical assistance centers throughout the United States.

Police Department
The University Police Department provides law enforcement services to the university community and is open 24 hours a day/seven days a week. All reports of criminal activity, fire, injury, or hazards should be reported to the department immediately. The department is staffed with sworn Peace Officers that have full police powers, and are trained and equipped to handle emergencies on the campus. All state laws, codes and regulations are enforced on the campus. In addition, the department is the answering point for the 911 system on campus. Dialing 911 on any campus phone or pay phone or residence phone places you in contact with the department, which has the capability of summoning the appropriate aid to help you. The police department provides many programs and services to reduce the risk of becoming a victim of crime.

Parking, Traffic and Vehicle Regulations: Parking Services is responsible for the day to day operations of the campus parking facilities. Parking Services requires all vehicles that park on campus to display a valid permit. Students must obtain the appropriate parking permit before parking in a designated “Student” parking lot. For your convenience, you may also utilize the parking meters. Keep in mind that permits are not valid at parking meters. Parking meters on campus accept nickels, dimes and quarters. One-day parking permits are also available for your convenience. These may be purchased from the dispensers found on the lots and accept credit cards. Daily permits can also be purchased with cash only at any one of the three Information Booths on campus. Semester and Academic Year permits must be affixed to the vehicle front inside windshield, lower corner, passenger side. The permits are easily removed and are repositionable. To be considered valid, all permits must be completely visible; this includes any serial numbers and security features.
It is strongly recommended that students arrive on campus up to an hour before their first class since parking near the academic core is limited. A summary of the campus parking rules and regulations may be obtained at the campus information booths and at the Parking Services office or on-line at www-admn.csun.edu/parking.

Associated Students Recreational Sports (ASREC) offers Intramural Sports, the Fitness Centre, Sports Clubs, Open Gym and Outdoor Adventures for the campus community.
Intramural Sports are activities which are designed so students, faculty and staff have the opportunity to exercise and compete in recreational or competitive team sports.
The Fitness Centre is located on the east side of the USU and is comprised of a multitude of the latest fitness equipment, swimming pool, boxing program, climbing rock wall and group fitness sessions. Student Development staff offers consultation on programs, assistance with group dynamics and leadership development, information on existing University policies, guidance on financial matters and the maintenance of organizational records. Advisors frequently serve as liaisons among students, administration, faculty and the community at large. More than 200 clubs and organizations represent academic, vocational, professional, religious, service, hobby, and social interests. Domestic Exchange:
CSU Northridge is a member of the National Student Exchange (NSE) consortium, which provides students with an opportunity to attend one of 165 colleges and universities across the U.S. for a semester or a year, where they earn full academic credit and are not required to pay out-of-state tuition. CSU Northridge accepts an equal number of students from among the NSE member campuses as part of the exchange program. Fraternities and Sororities
California State University, Northridge recognizes the opportunity for academic learning and personal development offered through membership in values-based fraternities and sororities. CSUN students who choose membership in Greek-lettered social organizations are provided with learning experiences that develop mature responsible individuals equipped intellectually, culturally and socially to become effective members of society. Participation in these learning communities offers developmental opportunities through leadership development, mentoring, supportive social networks, scholastic achievement, ethical conduct, moral justice, social awareness, value for the world’s diversity, life-long learning, and a commitment to service.
International Student Programs

The staff provides services to all international students after they have been formally admitted to the University and will assist international students in
- choosing a pattern of courses for general education requirements, and referring them to the appropriate department for academic advising in their major field of study,
- complying with the laws and regulations of the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service; and
- dealing with academic or personal problems. The Office also coordinates cultural and social events so that international students can share their national heritage with the campus educational community. A special orientation program is provided at the beginning of each semester to assist international students in adjusting to the campus environment and to American customs.
Leadership Institute
The Leadership Institute provides leadership development and personal growth experiences to members of campus clubs and organizations. Programs and workshops are developed to meet the needs of student leaders. Reference materials are available and seminars are conducted on a variety of leadership topics. Other interest areas include the Emerging Leaders Programs, which was established to provide students with a unique opportunity for personal development, community building and leadership development.
Orientation Programs

Overseas Study
The CSU International Programs (IP), the official study overseas unit of The California State University system, offers students the opportunity to continue their studies at a distinguished foreign university or a special study center in one of 16 countries. While on IP, students remain enrolled at CSUN, thus maintaining home campus residency and financial aid eligibility, and they earn full academic credit. The cost for these programs is affordable, since students pay only CSU Northridge registration fees and are not required to pay foreign tuition.
The Student Development Transcript Program
The Student Development Transcript Program encourages a holistic approach to developmental learning by enabling students to be intentional in their choices for out-of-classroom experiences, or co-curricular involvement. The program prepares students for their future by planning a personalized curriculum guide of co-curricular involvement that will allow students to develop life-long skills such as communication, human relations, and leadership, all of which are necessary to function in a global society and workplace. As a result of participation in the program, students will be able to request their developmental transcript which documents, semester by semester, the personalized co-curriculum of experiences and skills realized from their involvement on campus. The Student Developmental Transcript is a separate document from the academic transcript.

The College Health Specialists at the Klotz Student Health Center are dedicated to providing the highest quality health care to the diverse community at Cal State Northridge. Services are designed to help students stay healthy and provide support for achieving academic goals. All services are provided to currently enrolled students at little or no cost. There is no charge to see a nurse, physician, or nurse practitioner in Primary Care or for X-rays at the Health Center. The pharmacy, specialty lab services, orthopedic supplies, and the optometry, dental, massage, immunization, and acupuncture services are provided at low cost.

Immunizations Requirements:
By direction of the Chancellor, immunization for or immunity to Measles/Rubella is required for all students born after 1/1/57, while immunization for or immunity to Hepatitis B is required for all first-time freshmen 18 or younger. The Hepatitis B vaccine is given in a series of three shots and takes six months to complete.
Students enrolled in a California public school for the seventh grade or above after July 1, 1999 will have satisfied this requirement. If a student was not enrolled in a California public school for the seventh grade or above after July 1,1999 the requirement for verification/immunization for Measles/Rubella must be fulfilled by the end of a student’s first semester. Verification/immunization of Hepatitis B must be completed before the end of a student’s second semester.
To fulfill the requirement a student must bring written proof of immunization from a doctor, clinic or school transcript to the Klotz Student Health Center. If written proof is not available, students can receive the immunization(s) or blood tests to prove immunity for low cost at the health center. Students who cannot take the vaccination for religious, personal or medical reasons must sign a waiver. NOTE: Students will be unable to register for classes until each requirement is met.
Meningococcal Vaccine:Because college students (especially freshmen living in student housing) are at an increased risk for meningococcal disease, the Advisory Committee of Immunization Practices recommends that colleges raise awareness about the disease and the benefits of immunization. Students are encouraged to visit the website for more detailed information about the disease and to consider the vaccine which is offered at cost at the Klotz Student Health Center.
Student Health InsuranceStudents not covered by parent’s, spouse’s, employer’s or other individual health insurance plans are strongly advised to purchase health insurance that will cover services beyond the scope of the Klotz Student Health Center (emergency services, hospitalization, maternity care, surgery, etc). We are excited that you are considering living on campus. CSU Northridge resident students experience the independence of apartment-style living combined with the benefits of being part of a diverse, learning centered residence hall community. The University Park Apartments (UPA) community features furnished two-bedroom suites complete with living and dining area, kitchen or study area, bathroom and private balcony. In addition, each unit is cable TV ready and has access to the campus computer network systems. Housing for students with families is available at the University Village Apartments (UVA). The UVA offers one and two bed-room unfurnished apartments. Check our website to find out more about qualifications.
Student Housing provides its residents with recreational space, swimming pools, parking, laundry facilities, and study areas. A variety of meal plan options are available at the Satellite Student Union. Several Living Learning Communities are available in the UPA including Cinema and Television Arts, Engineering and Computer Science, the First Year Experience, Music, the Lighthouse (a living learning community concentrating on deaf studies and culture), Kinesiology, and Passport (a sophomore experience community). CSU Northridge residents become a part of the campus community and have an opportunity to meet and live with people from many cultural backgrounds. Student Housing also offers several other programs that benefit CSU Northridge residents and the campus community:
- Residential Life Program: An extensive residential life program, coordinated by a professional staff, promotes the personal, social, and academic growth of resident students through the implementation of many different programs and activities. A variety of paid leadership positions are available, such as Resident Advisor and Office Assistant positions.
- Resident Hall Association (R.H.A.) and Community Councils: Residents can develop their leadership skills through involvement in the Residence Hall Association and Community Councils. The organizations provide students with the opportunity to participate in residence hall governance.
- University Conference Program: Student Housing also provides both CSUN-affiliated and non-affiliated groups and organizations with housing and meeting space for business gatherings, seminars, camps, and conferences. Most on-campus conferences are scheduled when CSUN students are on vacation in the summer and residence halls are vacant. The Student Housing Conference Manager can also arrange for all dining, catering, parking, and facility arrangements.
- Guest Housing Program: A guest housing program provides hotel-style arrangements for short term visits to the University. Completely furnished suites with telephone, television with cable, and housekeeping services provide convenient and comfortable accommodations for University guests, visitors and campus community members seeking housing at nightly rates.
- Residential Computing Resources Program: The Residential Computing Resources program offers residents technology and computing services support. One large, centralized computer lab is available for resident use, offering access to computers, various software and high speed internet access. In-room wired and wireless data connections are also provided through this program for residents who own their own computers. Numerous Housing employment opportunities are also available.

The University Student Union, Inc. (USU) at California State University, Northridge has two locations, the University Student Union (USU) and the Satellite Student Union (SSU). Each facility was designed to enhance the total university experience through leadership opportunities, events and various services.
The USU first opened its doors on July 7, 1975 and is located on the east section of the California State University, Northridge campus on East University Drive. The SSU was built in 1991 to expand the USU’s services and programs and is located in the northern section of campus, adjacent to campus housing.
Completed in fall 2006, the USU underwent a $15 million renovation that resulted in the new Sol Center and various upgrades throughout the facilities.

The Office of Veteran Student Services acts as a liaison to the Veterans Administration Regional Office for veterans or dependents. The office provides information and assistance regarding certification of benefits, tutorial services, V.A. Work-Study, advance pay, and problems related to V.A. educational benefits. Academic and V.A. counseling is also provided.

The CSUN Women’s Resource and Research Center is a warm, inviting, comfortable place for CSUN students to learn, grow, hang out between classes, volunteer, or find resources and referrals for a variety of issues and challenges women face. While the Center specializes in issues and situations particular to women’s experiences, we openly welcome both male and female students to use and enjoy our space and resources. The Center also provides a resource lending library with over 300 women’s studies and gender based holdings. Each semester the Center offers a variety of meetings, support groups and special events. The Women’s Resource and Resource Center participates in a wide array of political and social campaigns and supports students in any academic endeavor.
