Floating on Air
Monday, June 21 8:00 am - Friday, August 13 7:00 pm - Delmar T. Oviatt Library (OV) Lobby
http://library.csun.edu/blogs/goingson/
The public is invited to experience the feeling of flight with a riot of vibrant and colorful kites hung from the ceiling of the library's lobby. For the past four years, the library has celebrated the summer with a kite exhibition. This year's show, "Floating on Air," explores the history and artistry of an invention and pastime that dates back centuries.
From the Chinese Han dynasty through today's space age, kites made of leaves, paper, silk, plastic, fabric, Mylar, bamboo, and graphite have been used to catch fish, spy on enemies, send signals, divine the weather, explore the atmosphere, photograph the Earth, tow boats, advertise products, act as targets for bomb drops and loft men and women into the wind.
This year's exhibit includes an extensive display of kite pins from kite festivals, kite vendors and kite masters; kites in cartoons, including Peanuts and Calvin & Hobbes; and kite-related curios, ornaments and toys.
Past exhibit favorites also will be back, including a miniature Chinese dragon kite, a 3-D Balinese clipper ship kite, a Chinese purple and black butterfly kite and a cellular star kite.
The exhibition is free and open to the public. For the library's summer hours, visit its website at http://library.csun.edu/.
